China’s domestic soda ash spot market was broadly steady on October 21, 2026, with prices in the northwest fluctuating within a generally stable range. Futures traded unevenly, while the overall supply-demand balance remained stable.
Customs data showed that China exported 284,100 tonnes of soda ash in September 2026, down 600 tonnes from the previous month. Imports totaled 200 tonnes, a month-on-month decline of 300 tonnes.

The small decline in exports indicates that outbound volumes were broadly maintained in September. Although imports also fell, their much smaller volume means the two declines should not be treated as equivalent signals for domestic availability. The trade figures alone do not establish a shift in the market’s supply-demand balance.
September’s export performance provides context for the steady spot market, but it does not explain October 21 pricing on its own. The trade data cover a completed month, whereas daily spot prices and futures reflect a different time frame. Futures fluctuations therefore warrant attention without being read as evidence of an established change in physical market conditions.
For buyers and sellers, the immediate question is whether subsequent spot price movements and export volumes continue to support the current balance. Sustained changes in either would offer a stronger basis for assessing price direction than a single day of futures trading.
